9:51 pm - Oh, man.
So, out of morbid curiousity, I've been surfing Andrew Bolt's blog a little. In case you don't know, Bolt is an right-wing Australian political commentator. A very right-wing Australian political commentator. He's posted articles about Australia swarming with hordes of Muslims, of those damn elitist Leftists... He reasons he is a man of the people, because only a man of the people would support an economic system that gives most of the privileges to less than ten percent of the population.

But I digress. The point in this entry is that Andrew has a blog. And on that blog people comment. Unfortunately for Andrew, most of the people who comment on his blog aren't particularly smart. Take this comment by one of his loyal supporters on a liberal journalist's views on the detention without trial of David Hicks:

"Hicks is a scummy, little traitor; so is huchinson; the notion of free speech in a pluralistic democracy must end when the people exercising that freedom are doing so with the sole aim of subverting the democratic structure; fairfax is a disgrace for not only publishing hutchinson, but for also preventing any counter opinion from being aired."

Somone should get this guy to write political satire. He'd be great.

5:12 pm - Why the Elves Suck
Also posted on Anti-Shurtugal (www.anti-shurtugal.com). In case you don't know, this is a rant on Christopher Paolini's Inheritance saga, but could be applied to 95% of all fantasy. At least, it seems that way to me.

2:20 pm - Review of The Golden Compass
All in all, it was a good movie, but it had Problems.

In case you don't know- this is based on the popular fantasy book by Philip Pullman, which is the first in a trilogy, and far less unsubtly political than the other two. It's set in a world like ours, except there are talking polar bears in the north who wear armour, as well as witch clans (it's never explained how exactly the witches, who are all female, procreate)... and, oh yes, the Church, known as the Magisterium, still controls every aspect of life and brooks no dissent.

The main character, Lyra, lives at a college in Oxford. One day Lord Asriel, her uncle comes, and a member of the Magisterium attempts to poison him- fortunately, Lyra is hiding in the room and manages to save him. Lord Asriel then says that And is one day visited by the lovely Mrs Coulter, who is graceful and very good looking and played by Nicole Kidman. However, Lyra learns that Mrs Coulter is part of the Gobblers- people who are kidnapping small children under the orders of the Magisterium, including two of Lyra's friends, Billy and Roger. She escapes from Coulter and thus begins her Grand Adventure.

The movie looks great, and the acting is pretty good too, particularly Kidman as Mrs Coulter. And the main actor isn't half bad either. For the most part, it was a good movie. But...

The directing and pacing weren't great for the first bit, at least. And the Magisterium were just plain evil, no comrpomise. They had snake daemons and ate in dark rooms lit by candles. Of course, having good actors play them helped a lot.

All in all, a decent enough movie, but like I said... it has Problems.

Also, look at the evil monkey!

4:11 pm - Review of Eldest
Yes, I am bored.

Okay. Oookay. Let me start with this straight away- I really, really hate this book. It's over 500 pages long, yet if you took out all the unnecessarily purple prose, stupid conversations etc it'd be about 20 pages long. The entiere book is, well, boring. It tries to be deep, but it really isn't.

To start with, the plot. What little of it there is. Really, you can summarise it like this:

-Ajihad gets killed by a band of Urgals, plus Murtagh gets carried away. The Twins MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEAR.
-Saphira goes hilariously drunk!
-Eragon goes to Ajihad's funeral. He grieves for Ajihad and Murtagh for about two seconds.
-Nasuada gets declared leader of the Varden.
-Eragon departs for the elves with Arya.
-Along the way they meet the dwarves. Arya makes fun of the Dwarvish religion.
-They meet the elves!
-Arya is actually PRINCESS OF THE ELVES.
-Eragon meets Oromis, who has a hairless groin.
-Saphira has the hawtz for Glaedr.
-Eragon walks around the elves watching them do Elf Things.
-Eragon listens to ants!
-Eragon gets his ass handed to him on a silver platter by Vanir.
-Oromis and Eragon train together.
-Saphria rapes Glaedr.
-Eragon goes to an elf orgy and is turned into a super elf warrior.
-Eragon attacks Vanir!
-The Empire attacks the Varden.
-There is a big battle and Roran comes. Eragon finds that there is another, evil Dragon Rider... MURTAGH!!!
-Eragon gets wholloped by Murtagh.
-Murtagh reveals that Morzan was Eragon's father.
-The Dwarf King guy gets snuffed out.
-Eragon and Roran agree to save Roran's fiancee.
